Hi Lo video poker is an interesting variation on the theme. As with other types of video poker, you are assessed on your final hand and given a win depending on how good the hand is.
Hi Low Video Poker can be found in two forms – either as a Jacks or Better Video Poker Machine that actually has a bonus Hi Low Double up feature (which is the most common form of Hi Low Poker), or as Hi Low-only type of game, in which the player only bets on a higher or a lower card.
You are less likely to find this version and most Video Poker machine manufacturers and software developers combine the Hi Low game with the standard game of Poker.
What does Hi Low reference mean at an actual casino table?
The term Hi Low in land based casinos and table versions of the game has an entirely different meaning than with Video Poker machines, and refers to the players’ right to claim the Pot. Most casinos will offer the following Hi Low Poker variations:
In Omaha Hi Low, which can arguably be considered as the most popular Hi Low poker variant, the players combine two out of four hole cards with the three “community cards”. The Pot goes to the players with the highest and the lowest ranked hands, 8 card being the qualifier. The other versions are more or less the same.
Since Hi Low is only a bonus feature, Hi Low Video Poker will employ the same rules and hand ranking as the main game variant. So, most of the time, you will be playing Jacks or Better, deciding which are the cards that you would like to keep and discarding the rest. Jacks are the qualifier in this version, so the player will need to have a pair of Jacks in order to win.
At the end of each round, Hi Low option is activated and the stakes are doubled if the player guesses which of the two randomly dealt cards will be higher. Some versions are actually limiting the number of times that the player can double up on the bet, allowing the feature to be used for just 4 consecutive times.
In the more simplified versions of Hi Low Video Poker, selecting Hi or Low cards is what the entire game is about and there will be no in-between sessions of Jack or Better or some other poker variant.

Every online and land based casino with a Video Poker offer is likely to have at list one version of the game featuring integrated Hi Low Double up bonus option.
Players who like the increased level of optional risk that this version provides, will likely find Hi Low machines among the rich offer of The Palms, Las Vegas Hilton, El Cortez, Red Rock Casino and plenty of other on and off-Strip venues.
In other versions of Hi Lo video poker, you only get the high/lo option at the end of the game and it acts as a double-up gamble feature
What this means, is that you will have your win, but then given a random card which you must try to guess if the next one will be higher or lower. If you get it correct, then your prize is doubled up.
With some hi lo video poker games, there is a limit to how many times you can double up. Quite often the maximum double up value is 4 in a row.
