If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! In most cases, your first attempt at something won’t be as refined as your second go at it. It’s clear that IGT agrees - that’s why they’ve returned to the Mayan theme to create something fittingly impressive! So, how does this slot stack up compared to its predecessor? Will it succeed in enchanting us, or is it simply not magical enough for that?
Gameplay
Visually, it’s a definite improvement over Maya Gold. Or well, it is in some areas. Having an actual background image is a massive improvement! We can’t quite make out what’s going on, but it looks cool. That’s good enough for us. We also enjoyed having each symbol having its own animation, even if they are somewhat basic. Something beats nothing! But at the same time, the actual icon designs feel really weird. Only a few of them give an actual Mayan feel. The rest of them feel quite generic.
Fortunately, IGT shifted away from the same gameplay formula it’s been using in all of its older releases. There’s a 5x4 board with 50 flexible paylines, which pay left to right only. Of course, having that many winlines and a larger playing field does change things slightly. But not as much as having actually interesting special features! There’s a free spins round with three different versions which you can pick from! Also keep in mind that expanding Wilds are active. And while free spins are more interesting, the expanding Wilds add up over time to become quite lucrative!
Gone is the attempt to recreate the layout of a physical machine. Instead, this blocky design is a lot more modern! Changing your total bet has also been streamlined. You can adjust the number of active paylines and the bet per payline. This allows for a minimum bet of GBP 0.10 per spin. That said, we wouldn’t recommend turning paylines off unless you can’t afford it. With all paylines active, your minimum stake is GBP 0.50. Meanwhile, your maximum bet is only GBP 5.00 on each spin!
A five-of-a-kind win with either the Mayan Magic symbols or the Wild will earn you the maximum prize: 1000x your total stake. That said, if you get one Wild in your row of Mayan Magic icons, which lowers the top prize to 500x instead. And while we don’t have the variance information, this time around we do know the RTP! Unfortunately, it’s below the current 96% average. At 92.18%, it’s way too low for our comfort level. We’d advise you to stay away from it, no matter how tempting it may be to play this slot.
Bonus Rounds
Collect three Scatters on reels two, three and four to win a free spins round. But unlike most free spins, this one allows you to pick your perfect special feature! Namely, you can choose one of three options. Pick between 15 free spins with the third reel Wild, 10 extra turns with reels two and four Wild, or 5 free spins with reels one, three and five becoming Wild. These expanded Wilds covering all reels last until free spins do. After that, the playing field goes back to normal.
And yes, the Wilds do expand So long as the Wild replaces even a single symbol, it will expand to cover its entire reel. This is quite useful for landing additional wins, we have to admit.
Finally, after a win, you can choose to gamble or keep your winnings. Gambling lets you choose between colours, or playing card symbols. Guessing just the colour right will double your prize, while picking the right card icon increases it by 4x. One wrong guess, however, and you lose it all!
Summary
In every way, Mayan Magic is an improvement over Maya Gold. And while there a few things the older slot does a little better, those are minor things. The important things: the graphics, the gameplay and the paytable? They’ve all been drastically improved. The 92.18% RTP is a little too low for our liking, we have to admit. But if you decide to give this game a try, you will probably have fun with it.
