Follow the Nile, and you will find one of history’s most important civilisations! Ancient Egypt may no longer be with us, but their impact has forever changed our world. And while everyone else may have forgotten them, slot fans continue to keep their spirit alive. So if you’re ready for another dose of the most popular theme ever created, then IGT has the perfect game for you! Although it may feel just a little bit -too- familiar…
Gameplay
Fortunes of Egypt was created more than a few years back. Such a long time ago, in fact, that IGT was still called Spielo or Gtech! Still, the developers used what was available at the time to create something cool and distinct. Well, as distinct as you can make it with a background this simple! We were pleasantly surprised to find out this slot even had symbol animations! They’re not mind-blowing, and only play once. But that’s impressively ahead of schedule by the developer!
Of course, we never let bad graphics stop us from enjoying a game. But this particular release felt just a little bit too familiar to play. Truth is, we enjoyed Fortunes of Egypt a lot! It has a 5x3 reel, with 25 flexible paylines which pay left to right only. But we enjoyed it just as thoroughly when it was called Formula X, and offered the same mechanics and pays. We’re not against slots re-using mechanics and ideas if they bring a new twist to it. But when all you’re doing is applying a new skin to an existing game? That’s when we’re going to have a few issues.
The old-timey user interface will be familiar to a lot of IGT fans! This release also sports the old layout, making it look like a less obnoxious physical machine. You change your total bet by adjusting your coin value, number of coins per payline and number of active paylines. This allows players to make some really interesting stakes! For example, you could, if you wanted, bet as little as GBP 0.01 on each spin. Of course, then you’d have to play with one payline, which is less than ideal! Alternatively, if you decide to max out your bet, you’ll be spending GBP 250 on each spin.
Wins can range from dreadfully boring to mouth-wateringly amazing! It all depends on what icons are involved, and if any special features triggered. The progressive jackpot is something you should absolutely chase if you can afford it. It will set you back GBP 2.50 per spin, but the awesome prizes are worth the extra cost. Sadly, IGT still doesn’t show us any RTP information for this old slot, either. As a general rule of thumb, anything beneath 96% needs to be really fun for us to consider recommending it. And if the game doesn’t have an RTP at all? Then we simply cannot recommend it. Them’s the rules!
Bonus Rounds
Collect three or more mummy jackpot symbols to win an awesome cash prize. What you win solely depends on whether you staked maximum credits per payline or not. If you did, you’ll get to pick between three sarcophagi to win either the regular, the super or the grand progressive jackpot! If you’re playing for less than maximum credits per payline, you just get 100x your total stake.
Find enough treasure chests in reel five to earn points that lead you to triggering the bonus game. After it’s active, you advance through the levels, increasing the prize money each time you ‘level up’. Your goal is to reach level five – that’s where all the best wins are!
Finally, three, four or five Scatters will earn you eight, twenty or one hundred free spins, respectively. During this bonus, all prizes are doubled except the jackpot wins and prizes won from the bonus round.
Summary
We’d love nothing more than to recommend Fortunes of Egypt, we really would. We’re big fans of the ancient Egyptian theme, and the gameplay is a lot of fun. But there are two reasons stopping us from doing so. Number one, it’s the exact same slot as Formula X, and we don’t support blatant cloning with no gameplay changes. Number two, we still don’t have any RTP information. Sadly, with these two issues in the way, this game will be forgotten under the sands of the Sahara.
