Fruit and slots go hand in hand at this point. The association is so strong that slots are called fruit machines in the United Kingdom, and considering the amount of different fruit that was displayed on physical machines for a long time, it’s no surprise that it’s stuck. Still, IGT wasn’t pleased with simply reuniting two different themes.
Instead, it went above and beyond to create something different. Samba De Frutas offers players a 5x8 playing field with 100 flexible paylines. This, by itself, changes up the gameplay dramatically compared to smaller reels, but you can also expect fully expanded Wilds, and a small amount of free spins with some insane re-triggering potential.
The user interface is rather well done, even if it doesn’t particularly use all of its screen space properly. The large reels have been pushed out to the left, while the bottom half of the right side of the screen has all the important things such as spinning, auto spin, options, wagers, and such. Perhaps realising the top right portion of the screen is unfilled, it simply has the poster which you see when you first boot the title sitting there at all times, reminding you of the wonders that are stacked Wilds.
The symbols themselves offer a very retro look, but they all have a bit of animation added to them. You can find dancing ladies, dancing men, a pair of puffins and a pair of parrots, mixed with some boring icons like 9, 10, J, Q, K and A. The Wild symbols is a lady wearing a hat filled with fruit, and since Wilds expand to cover the entire reel, you’re going to see a lot of fruit precariously sitting in that hat, which is always an amusing sight. Scatters are represented by a pair of maracas, and can only appear on the second, third and fourth reel.
Collecting all three at once is a relatively minor prize, simply a 2x win and five free spins. The reels change colour and Wilds become more active on the reels, which can help increase wins. The real bonus prize, however, is the ability to keep re-triggering this feature over and over, up to a maximum of 255 free spins, at which point IGT’s release imposes a hard cap and does not allow any more to go through.
The bonus, by itself, isn’t really anything interesting or different compared to other games we’ve played. What really stands out is the 5x8 playing field and 100 paylines with which gamblers can really alter their game experience.
The RTP is variable, sitting between 93.37% up to 96.05% at any given time. The biggest win go up to 250x your wager available on each free spin. It’s a medium volatility title that maximises the effect of its big reels, but the more we played, the more we felt that one more bonus could have really completed this title for us. Right now, it’s fun and enjoyable, but needs just a little bit more to push it to greatness that it deserves.
