Fire-breathing flying lizards seem to be humanity’s shared phobia, as every culture has their version of the dragon. Some are wise but fearsome, others are feral and destructive. But they all make for very iconic mascots, which is why we see so many in movies, shows, and slots! Pragmatic Play toys with flames as they try to create a game themed after dragons and ancient China. Can this release avoid the grim fate of being boring and generic? Or is it doomed to a life of mediocrity?
Gameplay
Initial impressions aren’t great. We can barely see the background, and it seems to be just a single static colour. The dragons on each side of the reels make up for it, however. They are fully animated, and will shake their heads at the player when they score a win. Not the most amazing animations we have ever seen, but Triple Dragons makes it work. Sadly, the theme itself does nothing interesting to win us over. It’s a blend of the same Chinese symbols you always see, paired with playing card royals.
You play this slot on a 3x3 board with 5 paylines, which pay left to right only. When one or two full vertical stacks of green dragons land on the playing field, the re-spin bonus is triggered. While this special feature is active, the green dragon becomes Wild, and its value is drastically increased if you can get a three-of-a-kind win. Re-spins continue until a winning combination occurs, which can lead to awesome wins! Or just a minor cash prize.
One of the things we really like about this game is that it’s super straight-forward. You will find your minimum and maximum stake listed in the paytable, so you don’t have to test it yourself. You can wager between GBP 0.05 and GBP 50.00 on each spin, which is a good betting spread for five paylines. Gamblers can set their total bet either by directly adjusting the values, or by tweaking coins per payline and coin value. Both options offer the same value, so there’s no advantage in either one.
Pragmatic Play’s release has a super high volatility, which we’re not big fans of. Not because we don’t like high variance! It’s not our favourite cup of tea, but it can be fun from time to time. Our grievances mostly come from the jackpot being worth 1000x your total stake. For the type of volatility Triple Dragons has, the value of its top prize should be a lot higher. This slot has an RTP of 96.51%, which is above the current industry average.
Bonus Rounds
When one or two fully vertically stacked green dragon icons appear on the playing field, they trigger the re-spin special feature. While this bonus is being played, the green dragons turn Wild, being able to substitute for any symbol. The initial Wild stack is locked in place, while all other reels re-spin. That said, if you complete a second stack of Wilds, it will also lock in place, increasing your chances of winning. The re-spins end when any winning combination occurs.
Summary
Now, we came into this game with mixed expectations, much like we did for our review of Treasure Horse. But where that release knocked out socks off, Triple Dragons failed to pique our attention for any sort of long-term play. Re-spins are a decently fun mechanic, but not good enough to keep players entertained for several hours. The theme also feels very generically Chinese, which is a shame because we know Pragmatic Play can do better. Finally, the lacklustre jackpot sealed the fate of this slot. We simply cannot recommend it as it is right now.
