Borrowing ideas for your slot isn’t anything new. Usually, when a cool new idea appears, every developer will rush out to make their own version of it. This isn’t something we mind, so long as we see software providers making an effort to change how it works. But when the game is a blatant rip-off of another release, we’re a lot less lenient. Sadly, this is where Tales of Egypt falls under; a very obvious copy of Book of Ra.
Gameplay
There’s nothing spectacular about the visuals offered here. The background image depicts various hieroglyphs, but is otherwise a dull, brown colour. The symbols are more colourful and varied, but they also have their flaws. They’re either stereotypically ancient Egyptian, or they’re playing card royals. There’s nothing in this slot that we didn’t see somewhere else. We know Pragmatic Play can do better, which is why we’re as harsh as we are.
You play this game on a 5x3 board with 20 fixed paylines, which pay left to right. Available special features include a free spins bonus, during which a random symbol will be chosen. Yes, dear readers, this is another Book rip-off. Pragmatic Play makes no effort to add something new to the mixture, either. If they did, we wouldn’t be as disappointed as we are. But cloning another developers’ release and passing it off as your own is something we will not tolerate.
At the very least, setting your total bet has remained a remarkably easy task in Tales of Egypt. It uses the same system the developers employs in their other slots. You can choose to directly change the total bet by pressing the plus and minus key until you get the stake you want. Alternatively, players can fine-tune their wager by adjusting coin value and coins per payline. No matter the method used, your total bet remains the same, between GBP 0.20 and GBP 100 on each spin.
But if you thought this game was out of the woods, sadly, it’s not. It offers a medium variance, which is fine by itself. It comes with a 1000x jackpot, which is fine, but is actually quite average. No, what drew our ire was the RTP. Coming in at 91.93%, it is extremely bad! Even the original Book of Ra, on which this release is based on, had a much better return! Even if we could look past everything else, this is something we cannot. Such a low RTP for a 1000x jackpot? Not a chance!
Bonus Rounds
Collect three or more Wild-Scatters to win up to ten free spins. It is possible to score additional extra turns while free spins are being played. Before the round starts, gamblers will see one of the icons from the paytable become the Chosen symbol. Said icon will act like a Scatter: paying from any position. This property only lasts until free spins are finished.
Those among you who have played the original Book of Ra may have noticed an aspect of the free spins missing. Yes, you’re correct; the expanding symbol has been taken out! The selected icon will no longer expand to fully cover the reel it is occupying. This makes landing wins even more difficult, and is no doubt partially responsible for the abysmal RTP.
Summary
We find reviews where we’re completely negative about a slot to be extremely rare. There’s usually some redeeming factor, something that we can point to and say they did well. But this game fails to accomplish even that! It has dull graphics which are in serious need of a revamp, and a special feature that’s been completely stolen from another developer. It’s worse than the original in every sense of the word. Do yourself a favour, and toss this Pragmatic Play release in the bin. That’s where it belongs.
