Legends say that every time a software provider makes another Chinese themed slot, a reviewer lets off a pained groan. We’re exaggerating for comedy, of course, but we are feeling a bit burned out on the setting. It doesn’t help that the vast majority of games tend to use similar art styles! Of course, that only serves to help the few Chinese themed releases that do it well. So which category does Lucky Dragons belong to? Is it yet another addition to the generic pile, or something new and exciting?
Gameplay
At first glance, all the suspicious elements are there. Overused symbol designs are there, as is a somewhat unhealthy splash of red -everywhere-. And yet, Pragmatic Play were smart enough to avoid the worst of it. Some of the more generic icons, like the coin on a string have pretty animations to make them more attractive. Meanwhile, the background looks quite intricate, with an elaborate pattern we can’t quite make out. It’s not the best take on this theme we have seen, and it won’t be winning any awards for pretty visuals. But it sits in a comfortable average, and that’s good enough for us.
Mostly because we’ve always been gameplay focused players! The slot is played on a 5x4 board with 50 fixed paylines, which pay left to right only. In terms of special features, there’s just one to look forward to: a free spins round. Now, wait, put down your pitchforks. Because that one bonus is really good at awarding decent prizes! How does it accomplish this? Well, it just so happens that each free spin has extra Wilds being added in various positions. And those Wilds just so happen to become sticky after landing, only managing to get free after the extra turns pass.
Being able to easily set your bet is very important for a game’s success. After all, with so many other releases trying to tempt your gamblers away, you need them spinning reels as fast as possible! Pragmatic Play manages to accomplish this without sacrificing a little bit of depth some older players might appreciate. You can choose to directly change your total bet, or use the older method of individually changing coins per payline and coin value. No matter what you pick, you will be able to bet between GBP 0.50 and GBP 250 on each spin.
With a top prize worth only 800x, Lucky Dragons felt quite disappointing. If free spins were more frequent and easier to come by, we’d be able to swallow it somehow. But given that this slot has a high volatility, we’re not in a compromising mood. That’s the one thing that bothers us a lot about Pragmatic Play; that too many of their games have awful jackpots. The RTP is 95.19%, which is below the current industry average of 96%. The dragons may be lucky, but you won’t be if you choose to play here.
Bonus Rounds
Collect three Scatters in the second, third and fourth reel to win six free spins and 2x your total bet. Once active, one Wild will be added to the second, third and fourth reel during each free spin. Existing Wilds will become sticky and remain in place so long as the special feature lasts. This means that you’ll be able to fill the reels with stacked Wilds very quickly, and all but guarantee winning combinations! No wonder the software provider limited it to just six free spins.
Luckily for us, they also gave us a means of extending the free spins round! While extra turns are already being played, any additional Scatters that land award one more free spin. And even one extra spin on a reel with guaranteed wins is a tempting one!
Summary
What’s wrong with Lucky Dragon aren’t graphics or gameplay. As we mentioned earlier in the review, the visual side of this isn’t that remarkable, but it’s not bad either. Gameplay is alright, though we’d like an extra bonus or two. But what we cannot get around is the awful math model of this slot. 800x for a high volatility game, with an RTP of 95.19%? Thanks, but no thanks.
