Greek mythology and slots go together like bread and butter. Nobody’s quite sure who did it first, but now everyone knows about it, and it’s making everyone’s lives better! With some of the most successful games using the theme, it’s no surprise that Pragmatic Play would eventually try it! So join us as we follow the adventures of Hercules, son of Zeus! What challenges can the world throw to a man who has been fathered by the most powerful deity of the Greek pantheon? Find out in this thrilling release!
Gameplay
Visually, Hercules Son of Zeus is exactly what you’d expect it to be. Beautiful Greek architecture is used to frame the reels, giving the slot a more refined look. The background image plays into this, with a scenic view of a colourful sky as the sun begins to set. You can see some arches and trees in the distance, with looming clouds adding detail to the clear blue sky. But the real stars of the show are the symbols! All of them fit quite nicely with the ancient Greek theme this game has going. Yes, even the playing card royals! They still don’t fit in properly, but it’s much better than usual.
You play this Pragmatic Play release on a 5x4 board with 50 fixed paylines, which pay left to right only. There’s only one special feature available, which we weren’t too happy about at first. But after playing it a few times, we were thoroughly won over! You get a certain number of free spins, and before each one, sticky Wilds are added to the board. Said Wilds only last until the free spins end, but are important to create a steady stream of solid wins during the special feature! Furthermore, there’s also a way to add extra free spins while the existing batch are already being played.
One thing we really like about Pragmatic Play is that they don’t try and fix what isn’t broken. Many developers will try to change their user interfaces after a few years to freshen it up. Fortunately, that’s not the case here. We get the same sleek and functional design in this slot. This layout lets us change our total bet directly, or by changing coins per payline and coin value. No matter which method you use, you will be able to wager between GBP 0.50 and GBP 250 on each spin.
We were hoping for a better jackpot given the medium-high volatility. At 800x your total stake, it’s not bad. But we should be striving for the best possible experience, not slightly above mediocre! And landing that top prize is just as difficult as you’d expect it to be. After all, it requires a full screen win of the most valuable icon in the entire game! It doesn’t help that the RTP is 95.19%, which is almost a whole percentage point below the 96% industry average. So while the special feature is fun, and you can get some good wins, the math behind this release keeps it from reaching its full potential.
Bonus Rounds
Collect three Scatters on reels two, three and four to win six free spins. During these extra turns, any additional Scatters that appear will add one more free spin to the counter. Before each extra turn, including the first, one Wild will be added to the second, third or fourth reel. These added Wilds are sticky, and will remain on the board until free spins end.
Summary
Honestly, we wanted to like Hercules Son of Zeus a lot. It uses one of our favourite themes, and it’s special feature can be quite exciting! Unfortunately, that enjoyment was somewhat ruined by the less than average RTP and a jackpot which doesn’t suitably fit the slot’s variance. So should you play it? If you’re just after a fun evening, then absolutely. But if you’re hoping for a big win? Then you should skip it and play something a little more lucrative.
