Astronomical Magic Review

Released by Konami, Astronomical Magic is a video slot which combines astronomy and wizardry in a 5-reel slot available across all platforms. The game features sharp graphics and a colourful palette, complemented by a haunting soundtrack. The main character is a mysterious wizard; he oversees a set of astronomical events which should bring solid payouts to the players. As many Konami-powered slot titles, Astronomical Magic was also available at land-based casinos before it was optimised for mobile devices and computers.

The slot’s visuals draw the eye. The background is a starry night, perfect to be observed by a skilled astronomer. To make matters more interesting, the wizard combines his astronomical instruments with spells. In accordance with the theme, the most notable symbols on the reels are spell books, telescopes, scales and pocket watches. Each symbol is heavily decorated. Low values are represented by 9, 10, J, K, Q and A. Astronomical Magic is played across 5 reels; there are 3 rows in play and 30 win lines. The substitute symbol (Wild) is the magician. He was most likely inspired by Merlin, as he wears a similar hat and has a long white beard. In his hands he is holding a globe. The Scatter is some sort of a strange astronomical clock or calendar. The word ‘bonus’ is written over it and the image of the sun can be seen in the centre.

The game’s commands are lined up below the reels. Apart from the main Spin button, the players can make use of the Max Bet and Autoplay options, increase game speed, bring up the game recall page, toggle sound on and off and view the paytable, among other adjustments.

Gameplay

The highlights of Astronomical Magic are the Action Stacked Symbols, the Lucky Frame feature and the Free Games feature. Action Stacked Symbols appear randomly, as they fill the secret adjacent positions on the reels with the same symbol. The Lucky Frame feature is triggered by three or more frame symbols. The reels with frames and Wild are nudged to fill all the positions with each of both. Frames are replaced with one of the regular symbols and the winnings are paid.

It is not possible to start over during the Lucky Frame feature but it’s possible to activate Free Games. The Scatter needs to appear at least in three positions to initiate free play. The bettor is awarded 8, 18 or 88 free games, depending on the number of Scatters that have activated the round. Free Games use different reels, and the Lucky Frame feature remains active.

Action Stacked Symbols are not a novelty for players who’ve seen this happen in other Konami slot machines. The Lucky Frame is not that common. Overall, the Astronomical Magic video slot is a solid effort from the Japanese company. It carries an RTP of 94.08 which ranks somewhat lower than most comparable slots from the same developer. The intriguing theme and a successful visual representation compensate for it, as well as the possibility to win up to 88 free spins.
